Cooper: Grants Assist Municipalities Complete Projects
October 22, 2024
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jill Cooper (R-Westmoreland) today announced grant funding was awarded to several local governments within the 55th Legislative District, including grants to improve local sewage treatment facilities.
“Support from this grant program goes a long way in making certain that local governments have the resources they need to provide important services without passing high bills on to residents and taxpayers,” said Cooper. “Without these grants, municipalities would face either raising rates and taxes, or simply having to put projects on hold.”
A $850,000 grant awarded to the Franklin Township Municipal Sanitary Authority will be used for upgrades to the 55-year-old Meadowbrook Road Sewage Treatment Plant in Murrysville. In addition, nearly $300,000 was awarded to the City of Lower Burrell for the installation of sanitary sewer line in the city’s Kinloch neighborhood.
The grants, known as Local Share Account grants, support economic development, job training, community improvement and public interest projects through gaming funds collected under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 71 of 2004).
Also announced were grants provided by the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program. The Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center received a nearly $2.5 million grant to make energy efficiency improvements at its New Stanton facility. The project is expected to save taxpayers at least 30% annually in energy costs.
“Most local governments have a list of projects they would like to complete but are very conscious of what their residents can afford,” said Cooper. “These grants help fill the gaps so that projects get completed in an affordable manner.”
Additional grants to municipalities in the 55th Legislative District include:
• Export Borough - $204,750 to construct a new municipal garage and salt storage shed.
• Loyalhanna Township - $185,349 to replace a 20-year-old mower.
• Municipality of Murrysville - $800,000 to replace the Logan Ferry Road bridge over Haymaker Run.
• New Alexandria Borough - $226,328 for the resurfacing of five borough roadways.
• Oklahoma Borough - $99,531 to pave the parking lot at Oklahoma Borough Park.
• Salem Township - $498,526 to replace a 31-year-old Gradall excavator.
